Jagalan Festival 2016

Jagalan Festival 2016

Description

YOGYAKARTA, 29 Oct 2016 – It’s a milestone! In October 2016, Arkomjogja and the youth of Jagalan Village organised a first architecture, film and arts festival at the historic enclave of Kotagede to introduce visitors to the area’s rich cultural heritage. Over the last weekend of the month, traditional artisans and performers gave participatory workshops, tours, discussions and competitions that drew on three years of hard work nurturing social entrepreneurship initiatives at local level.

The festival saw attendance of over 1,000 visitors, including many first-time travellers to Kotagede. Capturing the essence of Jagalan (the main heritage village of Kotagede) is this short film which won the “AirAsia Foundation Choice Award” at the Jagalan Festival Short Film Competition.

We are incredibly proud of our grantees – Arkomjogja – for making this festival a reality and sharing their skills through sketching workshops and architecture discussion panels. Not forgetting the Selaka Kotagede silversmiths who participated wholeheartedly through creating jewellery-making workshops and sharing their priceless heritage as custodians of a centuries-old tradition.

As the main festival partner, AirAsia also hosted two workshops – ‘Creating a Travel Video with AirAsia’ and ‘Marketing Workshop with AirAsia’ – to share our know-how with youth participants. We take this opportunity to thank Indonesia Tourism for supporting this initiative and joining us to launch this inaugural event.
